This course will introduce you to GarageBand on your iPad so you can play, create, jam and mix your own music wherever and whenever you want.

What terminology is used?

Nearly all terminology used in the course is Apple’s own. This is to keep the course in line and consistent with Apple’s official GarageBand help pages and resources.

What materials are included?

All video lectures, transcripts, links and additional help files are included in the course. Once paid for, this course is yours for life - including all updates. However, as of January 2018, I am focussing on completing and publishing my Advanced GarageBand for iPad course - so no more updates to this course are planned.

Note: The GarageBand App is Apple software and only available for Apple devices.

How long will the course take to complete?

Because the course is structured around 10 minute videos, the pace you choose to learn at will determine how long it will take to study this subject. If you want to proceed quickly through it as fast as you can, it may only take you 2 hours. However, if you take your time, explore the things that are demonstrated and take part in the quizzes, it might take you a few days.

How is the course structured?

Currently, the course is made up of 15 video lectures which are an average of 10 minutes long. In between lectures 4 to 12, there are quizzes that relate to the subject materials of each lecture - to test knowledge and encourage you to retain concepts and information more clearly. There is also a final quiz that tests knowledge across everything covered in the course - except the three bonus lectures.
There are also some additional information lectures in the final section which were added when the GarageBand App was updated to version 2.2.

Note about App version:
This course is optimised for GarageBand for iOS v2.1. Apple released an update - v2.2 in Jan 2017 which has changed the look of some views and functions shown in this course. If you have updated to v2.2, please refer to the section of Additional Information videos at the end of the course that cover the changes that were introduced with the new version.

This Instructor patiently explains everything a complete novice needs to know to be able to make their own song on the Ipad. Extremely thorough introductory course. Very eager to get his Advanced Course whenever it becomes available!!

After a slow start to the course, you will quickly be introduced to creating your first voice recording. Next, you will be shown how to navigate the interface and add new instruments, tracks, regions and adjust settings. There are several optional quizzes to take and a number of practical follow along assignments. This course contains a lot of information and is best followed by having your ipad in front of you as you pause and play the lessons. I would have liked less 'you can find that in my advanced course' but I guess that comes with the territory! All in all a very insightful course, ideal for beginners and will have you creating your own 'music' in just a few hours. I hope this helps? Kind regards, Robin.

I really, really like this tutorial - you can tell that Paul is a professional trainer. Each section is well written, nicely paced and delivered carefully. I've been following the course over a couple of days, half an hour at a time, then trying out what I've learnt afterwards. Binge watching doesn't work for me, I need information to be chunked and delivered in a logical order, which is exactly what you get here, over the last four or five years I've bought a lot of media training for video but this is my first iPad audio training, and this is up with the best, very pleased.

As someone new to Garage Band it is answering all my questions and letting me know about all options. It is also set at a great pace. I appreciate the quizzes as well. Many tutors do now have quizzes.

Wow! What an AWESOME introductory course on GB with exhaustive coverage!! The great thing about this course is that it covers the latest version of GB with Live Loops, Drummer, etc. which are highly interesting. Kudos to Paul for putting this up! Waiting for your Advanced GarageBand course :) PS: Instrument data is also called MIDI data that can be edited at the note level and also the instrument itself can be switched to another after recording. Audio data (vocals/guitar/etc) is binary and not much editing is possible other than trimming (maybe editable in Logic Pro X, etc). When we record using Inter-App Audio or Audiobus or using a controller (keyboard) through an audio-interface, the recorded track is Audio and not MIDI. When a track is recorded using Audio Units, it is MIDI. When a keyboard is connected without an audio-interface, it usually records the app's sound on the selected track in MIDI instead of the keyboard's native sounds. If using an audio-interface, the recorded sounds are from the connected interface as Audio.

Paul, thanks for putting this course together on using GarageBand for the iPad. I have been playing with both versions and before taking your course, I did notice quite a difference between the two programs. Your course helped put it all together and explain where to find many of the functions that I learned about in the Mac version. I suppose you'll let us know once you develop your Advanced program using the iPad.

Wow! I’m only one-third the way through this course and I’m massively impressed by Paul Douglas and the time he took to make this the best instruction. I’d been looking through Youtube and it’s been a hit-and-miss in quality. The step-by-step instruction from Paul is so highly polished and professional. Quality graphics and live screen recordings show what needs to be done in real-time. I couldn’t have figured out all this on my own, even if I had a friend proficient with GarageBand showing me in person with his ipad.

The instructor takes great care to make sure you understand each aspect of the software. The course is setup in a logical sequence and is very easy to follow. If you want a strong foundation in Garage Band, I highly recommend this course. I am looking forward to taking the advanced course as well.
