Why take this course?

*New Speed Tests added to test your reading speed - May 2023.

*New video: Reading Fiction for Meaning - January 2023

*Please note that improvements by the end of the course will be small because the course is quite short. Your real improvement happens if you continue to practise. Keep in touch, though. I always like to hear from my students - present or past!

The Improve Your Reading Speed and Comprehension course will help you become a better reader.

When reading for pleasure, you will remember more of the material and engage with it in a deeper way.

When reading for academic purposes, you will retain more information for quizzes, tests, and exams.  Also, you will have better access to the material for essay writing, book reports, speeches, and so on.

Being able to read is one thing - being able to read well and comprehend what your read is another!

Also, increasing your reading speed without losing the essential reading comprehension piece will bring you many rewards no matter what kind of reading you are doing.

This is not essentially a typical speed reading course. I want you to improve both speed and comprehension. There will be texts in your life that need to be read more slowly, and that's fine. Some material should even be read aloud. The tips here are primarily to increase speed while reading silently. Improving comprehension can slow one down at first. However, as you become more proficient gaining ground in comprehension will also increase your ability to read faster.

It is all related!

Please, come and be willing to engage yourself, and you will reap the benefits of improved reading!

I always having a problem with comprehensive reading; even I read a lot, I couldn't remember what I got after finishing any book. So, this course in a perfect match for me. I learned some tips since Section 1 and hopefully learn more until the last section.

Understood the I should have a feel of pleasure & purpose. while reading. I have both in my mind but the question is that how to get it practically. Again I loose my interest when I do not understand the meaning for the new words..

O professor parece entender as matérias, soube transmiti-las, mas os tópicos foram ministrados com pouca profundidade e detalhe.

I understand the step process, but for a person in their later years (almost 60) I found them confounding and irritating honestly. If you want to improve your understanding and cognitive reading for work or ESL, I suppose the steps are more in-line with the learning process. Just was not a fit for me.

So much of this may seem obvious, but it is very practical, and I can't wait to put it into practice.

I mostly get confirmation of my own findings in that course, but there was couple of points which I wasn`t aware for which I thank You. Excercise was in my opinion poor. In general I recommend that course a a basic.

Yes, it's been a long time since i thought about comprehension, but more how to get something out of reading. This course helped to remember something and learn others.

This course provides what it promises -- effective instruction and guidance to help one improve reading speed and comprehension. Lessons are clear and immediately practicable. I wish this course had been available when I was a student! I especially appreciate this course's prioritization of comprehension and retention over speed, because meaningful reading (beyond mere decoding) occurs only to the extent that comprehension occurs; speed follows primarily as one gets better and faster at comprehending. This course shows how to do all of this effectively while increasing the fun of reading. This course applies to both fiction and non-fiction reading, which is great; but for my purposes I found that the course's approach to non-fiction reading focused too much on the sorts of "textbooky" sources typically encountered by young students -- the kind of sources that have the text broken up generously with plenty of headings and subheadings that act as signposts to guide the reader through the text's meaning. As an adult long past my school days, I had hoped this course would provide more advice about dealing with the materials I usually read now -- challenging texts, often with no headings nor subheadings beyond chapter titles. This issue is relevant to this course because many of this course's recommendations involve using headings and subheading for things like previewing and generating questions to guide one's reading; it's not clear how to apply this course's teachings to challenging non-fiction material that doesn't have headings and subheadings breaking up the text. Overall, this is an excellent course that delivers what it promises; and the instructor is helpful and engaging.
