What you will learn

Understand the basics of any programming language

Develop an outline and implementation plan for creating an app

Break a problem down to data and functions

Why take this course?

In this course, you'll learn the fundamentals of how programming languages work. Using the metaphor of cooking and restaurants, you'll get concrete, plain english answers to questions like “What programming language should I learn?” and “What is programming?”

Programming courses and classes have some of the highest dropout rates of any professional domain...that's because the ideas are often presented in a very abstract way...Don't worry, this course is different. As long as you understand how a recipe works, you can understand how coding works.

At the most basic level, programming is two things: Ingredients and Preparation. That's our cooking metaphor...the words a programmer would use for these two terms are Data and Algorithms.

When you cook something, you are taking those raw ingredients and transforming them, cooking them, in some way to get a final result, the plated meal.

Your input is ingredients, your output is a plated meal.

A cookbook contains recipes, each with 2 parts. The ingredients are up top, and the preparation is below. Sometimes there is even a picture of what the final result will look like. Those 3 things, the input, transformation, and output, are the fundamental parts of both cooking and programming.

I spent a lot of time getting very frustrated when I was first starting out learning programming, and I almost quit a few times.

This course is about getting you past the initial stage of total confusion, which for many people lasts for the first few weeks or months of programming, to the next stage where you can learn at your own pace and feel confident knowing you have a solid foundational understanding so you can start to think like a programmer.

It gave me a basic understanding about coding without me getting board. I could visualize what he was talking about.

Good intro to Information systems as a whole and also helps to pull all the pieces and jargon together.

Although it's good to know what I will be paying for and why I should do so, these 27 minutes did not give me a clear view on what I will be learning. I honestly am in doubt now whether I should take the whole range of courses or start some free lessons at Codecademy.com first...

It was rather boring, but that's because I'm more of a visual learner, and this didn't cater to that much. Nonetheless, there was great information here, and the instructor had great ways to look at coding to help it make more sense.

I am a great cook and enjoy the creative component of the meals I make. I have also been extremely inspired as of late to make an App for a book/self study called A Course in Miracles. I knew that in order to make this App in the way I see it in my mind, that I must learn how to code. This idea was daunting to me, but I was open. In coming across this course "If you can cook, you can code" I knew this it was for me!! Timothy spoke my language all the way along, and encouraged me to focus on the small steps and small ideas for they all add up together in the end. The greatest thing I got out of this course, was the importance of staying motivated. I cannot, and will not fail. I have been using LiveCode for my app already, and I am seeing some feedback and really excited. Thank you Timothy for your amazing course!!

Really enjoyed this course and I now have a clearer overview on how to go about learning a programming language. The instructor did a great job presenting each lesson in a clear and easy to follow manner and because of it I was able to finish the entire course which for me is a really tricky thing to do here on udemy .. I`d be happy to take other related courses taught by Timothy Kenny!

The instructor engage you in the course beautifully and force to think differently, Frankly speaking he nudge the programmer inside me. Course material is well organized and up-to-date. However that will be amazing if the respected Instructor give real world example, built plan to finish product by using a new way concept from different angle. This course helps those who have difficult to think like programmer, it doesn't teach you coding stuff. However, it will make you to think out of the box with new way. The production quality is high resolution with great sound quality. I will increase rating later because so far I have completed almost half and I am happy with it give a four star rating, which will goes up with the passage of time. Regards Faisal
