Why take this course?

Welcome to the very first Bolt  (Visual Scripting) Course on Udemy!!!

I'm happy to release this course and look forward to your feedback. Even if you do not choose to purchase my course I strongly encourage you to give Visual Scripting (formally Bolt) a try. It's a great tool for beginning or experienced developers.

Why Use Vispual Scripting for Making Fun Video Games?

Developing Games can be very fun and rewarding once you know how. And with Unity's Visual Scripting Tool (Known as Bolt when this course was created) it has never been easier to build full robust games without any programming.

I've been a business application & game developer for over 30 years.  I honestly think Unity's Visual Scripting tools is one of the best that I have worked with. In this course you too will quickly see the real power of Visual Scripting as we almost effortlessly build a fun idle tycoon game like adVenture Capitalist. Even if you have never programmed before, this course will allow you to get started building the game in a matter of minutes.

Over the past 30 years I've developed games in a variety of platforms and languages.  On Udemy alone I have successful game courses on Odoo, Python, C#, and PlayMaker. I really cannot say enough good things about Unity's Visual Scripting Engine.

It is easy to use and integrates nearly seamlessly with the Unity Editor.

How does Unity's Visual Scripting compare to Playmaker?

In addition to Unity's built in scripting there are several other popular visual scripting assets also available. One of the most popular is Playmaker. Playmaker allows you to use finite state machines to build games. Unity's Visual Scripting platform also provides state machine diagrams that perform much like Playmaker in managing states. The big benefit of Unity's Visual Scripting however is that the scripting flow diagrams themselves map directly to the C# and UnityEngine libraries. This gives you a great advantage if you already know C# when coming into Visual Scripting in Unity. Once I understood how to connect units and create flow graphs I was able to build games with virtually no learning curve at all as I already know C#.

Playmaker however uses custom actions that you use to power your state diagrams. These work well and Playmaker is a great asset. Unfortunately having to learn proprietary actions and commands is a big drawback of playMaker. Especially for those who intend to further their game development skills by learning C#.

Unity's Visual Scripting can help you learn C#

If you are a new C# programmer who is finding the syntax of the code gets in your way I can't recommend Bolt enough. Even better, you can configure it to use real C# syntax in the visual units. I really enjoy how I can use real C# methods with the exact same arguments I would use in real C# scripts. It's like intellisense on steroids. This tight tie in with C# makes it that much easier to incorporate what you learn from Bolt into improving your C# skills.

Bolt allows you to focus on game design and achieving results rather than all the syntax of writing code. If you are an experienced C# developer you owe it to yourself to take a look at Bolt for prototyping and approaching game design from an alternative perspective.

Bolt offers a rich API so it is easy to integrate your own C# scripts with Unity's Visual Scripting flow graphs.

It's outdated and uses BOLT, the old Visual Scripting tool, which means you'll miss many new features and UI it's quite different. If you can get over it (wich means a lot) the tutorial it's fine and well-explained.

Easy to digest, and the course delivered above my expectations for the material. Definitely recommended for anyone that wants to rapid-prototype or even rapid-develop a production game.

Got to the point of the course and I didn't have to mess around with graphics. Showed how bolt is used for this type of game and was easy to follow with good assignments for a challenge.

feel like some of the steps get skipped. all of a sudden we are in a new area with no explanation how to get there. problem for people very new to this, perhaps not so much for more experienced people

i liked that he made a mistake showed what they looked like and fixed it slowly and with great detail.

Excelente instructor, buen ejemplo y perfectamente explicado. Se necesita un conocimiento entre básico e intermedio de Unity y de C#, eso ayuda bastante a comprender.

I've learned a good deal of what I've set out to accomplish with this course. There is however quite a few times where the author gets confused and thus confuses the audience as well. I think this needs to be cleaned up to bring more clarity to the course.

IT was very informative for me as a total beginner to Bolt and Udemy also. There were minor hickups coming from the inexperience with Bolt itself, but that didnt take away too much from the value of the course.

It covered the extreme basics of getting started with an idle game. But it is no where near the functionality needed to make a complete game. It doesn't explain offline timers, multiple scenes, or menus. Basically the only thing this course covers is creating a shop. And that's it. I liked the info covered and how it was presented but it just didn't cover enough of what is needed to make an idle game. There are also questions from a long time ago with no response from the creator so do not expect any updates to this class.

Nice course, very basic but understandable. I preferred to have a clean video instead of some errors fixed by editing with captions. That looked a bit unprofessional. I would have liked to see more about super units than just putting everything in it.

It's a very brief, but thorough introduction to Bolt. It'd be nice if there was more to it, but I understand if the demand isn't really there.

I'm totally impressed with BOLT and every thing you can do with it. So glad I signed up for this course because I think this will be the tool I use in Unity from now going forward. Instructor is great, easy to understand.

The content is currently short, but it does tell quite good how to use Bolt; what is the one possible workflow with it. Would love to see that instructor will add more content to this course so that the title will match more with the actual content. Waiting for the new content to be arrived to get more ideas about how to use Bolt more efficiently.

I had never used Bolt before, and this course game me a good enough understanding to not only build this Idle Tycoon Game, but to make my own game.

After using Playmaker for over a year, I started hearing about Bolt and wanted to learn more. From what I learned so far, Bolt appears quite superior and more flexible. So I overjoyed to see this instructor come out with a Bolt-specific course. In the past, I've found Greg's teaching to be easy to follow and he keeps things interesting and progressing forward. I feel like I'm learning more programming skills using Bolt than I was while working with Playmaker. Idle game-making (and other game-making) are excellent ways to learn a new language or scripting environment. Keep up the great work!
