I have taught IB CS off and on, as well as numerous other computer science courses, for over 4 decades. I’ve taught in the US, South Korea and at two international schools in East Africa. From my experience, students with US and East Asian backgrounds really struggle with the level of ambiguity presented in IB CS exams (in comparison to AP exams for example). I found it challenging to help students develop the skills required on the written tasks. Mr. Iglar provides numerous examples of how to approach these problems. Additionally, the topics covered will surely give additional content knowledge. If I were teaching IB CS in the classroom I would do my best to have students sign up at the beginning of year 1. Mr. Iglar’s Section 2 provides great insight into how to approach a course like IB CS. Furthermore, these points are rarely covered by teachers in our quest to cover the extensive content of the curricula. I would then set goals for students to finish Mr. Iglar’s Udemy course before my end of year 1 exam. The fact that students wouldn’t have covered some concepts is not as important as the methodology that Mr. Iglar is going through. Another good option would be to complete the relatively easy first and second section during the first couple of weeks of the first year, then save the rest for the break between year one and two. At that point you’re likely to know more of your weaknesses when it comes to IB CS questions. Like every learning experience, you’ll get out of it what you put into it. Those that allocate the appropriate amount of time and energy to attempt the problems on their own, as designed by the course, will of course gain the most. Because, we can’t learn without making mistakes, said some CS Sensei somewhere.
