Why take this course?

Self-publishing a book is a complex project made more complex by all the mis-information on the web.  Marketing the book is yet another problem area that the author must solve.

Imagine having an experienced, self-published author direct your every step for both the publishing and marketing components of the project

Many self-publishing authors don’t consider marketing until after the book is published.   This approach is wrong.  Publishing and marketing are two parts of a single project.  This course provides the student with an integrated project plan that will both publish the book and marketing it.

Hank Quense has self-published over 25 highly-regarded books and knows the pain points and the pitfalls of both the publishing and marketing processes.

In this course you’ll learn:

* How to put together a complete publishing and marketing project plan

* How to format and design both ebook and print editions

* How to write a strategic marketing plan

* The differences between packagers and publishers

* The differences between the lazy way and the professional way to self-publish a book

* How to create a quality book package to attract buyers

* How to recognize and avoid scammers

The course gave clear and thorough coverage to the numerous tasks involved with self-publishing a book and warned of the many mistakes authors can easily make.

I am delighted that he covers the early planning stages so well. There are so many things that we hear need to be done for self-publishing and marketing to be successful; it can be overwhelming! The thing I liked best is that Mr. Quense shows what we should do for the six months ahead (as well as the time after) the launch, and breaks it all down, month by month. Finally, some light in the darkness and shape to the madness! The handouts are very useful as well, ranging from simple task lists to sample questions to share with potential reviewers. All in all, a very useful course.

The course provides welcome guidance for the writer who has never before self-published. It really delivers on its promise to help the newbie by demystifying the process. This is not the first Hank Quense offering I’ve examined. One of the things I appreciate about his approach is its “step by step” character. He ticks off all the major, and some minor, tasks for publishing and marketing, gathering them into a simplified timeline (6 months before publication, 5 months, etc.) that is easy to follow and to employ with your own manuscript. The only other topic I would have liked to have seen would have been a more complete assessment of the relative pros and cons of a broad publication strategy that makes one’s book available through a variety of publication channels (Amazon, iBooks, Barnes & Noble, etc.) vs. exclusive publication via Amazon. In the US, there is a business case to be made for the second approach. This, however, is a personal bias. There’s plenty of great content here, including handouts to guide the new author’s efforts. I thought I knew this topic pretty well, but I learned some new things as well. Recommended.
