Description

This course will get you started on your way to a successful academic publishing career! You will learn how to:

·see a manuscript through from conceptualization to publication

·develop habits that will support your writing

·anticipate (and survive!) common pitfalls in academic writing and publishing

You will also learn what to expect after you submit a manuscript for review and how to respond in an appropriate and timely manner to decision letters.

This course is intended to be used in two ways:

·to provide you with an overview of the academic writing and publication process

·to return to when you need specific help with a part of the overall process

The course is structured in a linear manner (from manuscript conceptualization to publication). However, feel free to move around as needed as most lectures can be viewed as stand-alone.

The course outlines very well the process of writing for submission, focusing on the important steps and processes and elucidating how to better think about the text to be submitted. However, when it comes to the structure and outlining of the text the course is not that effective. Lacks more abstract examples and maybe some practical activities to train/evaluate the student. The audio in the videos was not normalized. That means, some videos contained audio with volume too loud while others, too low. One last resource that would be nice is to provide subtitles for the videos. This way the student can follow both the text slides and the spoken explanations.

This course is perfect for anyone who is just getting started with the whole publishing expectation. The suggestions Dr. Hall gives are clear, concise, and help you set reasonable expectations for the whole process. I am a beginning doctoral student, but I found the course beneficial even at this stage, because it will help me look at papers I write in future courses through a whole new lens. I expect to refer back to the lectures repeatedly as I move through my doctoral studies. Additionally, Dr. Hall is quick to respond to any questions or concerns that you post, mostly within the same day, sometimes within hours. This is helpful and makes the course proceed more smoothly.
