Why take this course?

Did you know that 1 in 5 people live with or know someone who is struggling with substance abuse/addiction issues whether it’s alcohol, drugs, sex or gambling...etc?

Almost all the focus goes to those who are struggling with substance abuse issues, and as for their family and friends, they get minimum to no attention despite the many negative effects that come as a result of being around substance abusing individuals: codependency, stress, anxiety, and depression just to name a few. There’s also a reasonably high risk of becoming an addict especially in the case of children who grow up in such an environment.

This course was created to correct this issue and is, therefore, for family members and friends of those with substance abuse problems.

We’ll first start by covering the negative effects of addiction on friends and relatives and then examining just how deep this problem really goes. We’ll then move on to the negative effects of addiction on you (as the family member or friend) and help give you a better understanding of the negative behaviors and feelings you might have developed. You’ll also learn how to create new behavioral patterns (a new normal) that will lead to a happier you.

The need for control is a common reaction to attempt to change the person struggling with addiction and get them to stop. You’ll learn how this rarely works and what you should be focusing on instead.

You might be feeling shame and guilt as a result of trying tirelessly to help your friend or loved one who is struggling with addiction to no avail. These 2 negative feelings can be pretty immobilizing, however, you're going to learn the action steps you need to take to overcome them.

Enabling the person with substance/addiction issues might sound inconceivable to you, but you’ll learn how you might be unintentionally aiding your family member or friend in their destructive behavior. You’ll discover the many ways you might accidentally be doing this as well as what you can do to prevent this from continuing to happen.

Finally, you’ll learn how to communicate efficiently with the person close to you to better help and support them. The course comes with 8 exercises which will help solidify your learning and make sure you take action immediately towards a new, better life for you and your friend or loved one.

The lecturer spoke in lay-man’s terms and gave very practical suggestions. She also gave good perspective regarding the responsibilities of the person with addiction, and those of the person living with addiction. The lecturer also spoke about some salient reminders i.e. what might be a good short-term intervention with people with addiction is not necessarily a good solution for them in the long-term.
