MySQL is a general purpose relational database management system (RDBMS) used mainly to provide a back-end database for web applications. In this course, we'll introduce the concepts of relational database management systems in general, and how they relate to MySQL in particular.

Unlike traditional courses that concentrate mainly on theory, we'll take a practical “how-to” approach to working with data. Here's what you'll learn:

The course cover following topics:

PHP

  • basic syntax, variables, loops and decision constructs.
  • Object oriented features
  • String functions.
  • Arrays
  • REQUEST, GET, and POST
  • Integrate MySQL databases with PHP.
  • Creating databases and tables
  • Adding data to a table with INSERT
  • Reading a table with SELECT
  • How to use WHERE to filter data
  • Using ORDER BY to sort data
  • JOINs and how to use them to read from multiple tables
  • Changing data in a table with UPDATE

Being told in the middle of the program to go and learn about object oriented programming before moving forward was a bit obtuse.

All the links and downloads worked perfectly. The only thing to point out is that the PHP version is now 5.6.15, whereas the version in the lesson was 5.6.3, so there is a slight variation in the look of the server page. This might confuse a complete beginner.

This is a decent course that covers some of the basics. Though the authors should include the .sql files for download for students to examine and maybe a cheatsheet or a link to a cheatsheet for the mysql commands.

Gets you started on the topics and knowledge you need to understand PHP and SQL. Greatly recommended for beginners. Instructor doesn't go completely in depth but focuses more on get you briefly introduced to both platforms.
