Why take this course?

Thoroughly revised in September 2021!

If you’re a blogger, author or online publisher looking for a competitive edge, consider reliability and accuracy.

It takes just a little bit of consistent effort to achieve writing that readers can enjoy and fans recommend without hesitation, because you’ve cleared it of careless bloopers and mortifying blunders. With a simple fact checking routine, you’re elevated to a higher echelon of writers.

Instructor Marcia Yudkin has been a published author for more than 30 years. She has written for national magazines like the New York Times Magazine, Ladies Home Journal and TWA Ambassador, for big-name publishers like HarperCollins and Penguin and for National Public Radio.

She created the course because she witnessed how humiliating it can be when readers and important industry contacts catch a blogger or author making dumb mistakes, like putting Sydney in Austria rather than Australia or mixing up sudoku (the number game) and seppuku (ritual suicide).

“Fact Checking Made Easy” consists of 13 practical lessons totaling more than an hour and a half of video instruction. At its heart are three complete now-you-try-it exercises (and another partial one) where you give fact checking a go and then compare your findings with Marcia’s answers and analysis. It’s hand-on learning at its best.

Besides the video lessons and exercises, you have access to full written transcripts of the lessons, along with several handouts that make the learning process more convenient.

Among the points you learn in this course:

    * How to create a fact-checking routine that catches errors and inconsistencies

    * Where and how to check various kinds of facts - including an amazingly helpful, taxpayer-funded free research resource

    * The difference between opinions that don’t warrant a fact check and statements that do

    * Pitfalls in getting names and numbers correct

    * The importance of recognizing and discounting biased or outdated sources of information

    * How not to fall for and pass along hoaxes, baseless rumors and myths that have already gone around the Internet thirty thousand times

    * The kinds of mistakes that run the greatest risk of landing you in legal trouble, and how to avoid those

    * The best way to handle it if an error does nevertheless slip by you

Whether you write a blog, a newsletter, a book or ebook or simply private emails to potential joint-venture partners, avoid loss of face, build credibility and be a writer that people praise, instead of pointing out your should-have-known-that errors.

It’s fun, it’s practical, it’s important - and you get lifetime access to the course once you enroll.

I have learned a lot. This course has taught me how not to trust my memory when it comes to fact-checking. it has also taught me as a content writer/editor to always read in-between the lines just to keep in check of accuracy. I must Confess, this course is unique and amazing.

It did talk about the fundamentals, but as a Fact Checker in India, I would have loved to know about more tools that I haven't worked upon.

So far she is very easy to understand and speaks with a clear voice. I'm now finished with the course and it was fantastic! I plan on doing my "training" on Face book by checking "news" sites to see if the posts are accurate. I'll be busy!

It's a good foundations class. The exercises are awesome, however, I think it needs more material on how to fact-check in the digital era. Perhaps, it could also suggest a couple more global websites that we could look for information.

A well-informed tutor, with relevant and up-to-date text examples. Very clear voice and her slow, deliberate style made me trust her teaching. Excellent teaching strategy: theory, then examples, then practice. Emphasis on the integrity involved in getting the facts right - and rightly so, in this day of fake facts.

This course is clear, precise and informative. I am learning more about fact checking than I thought possible. There are good exercises that are explained in detail. I would recommend that every writer needs this course.

In this very comprehensive and detailed course, Ms. Yudkin outlines not only why facts matter but how to spot which areas of an article contain them and where and how to check for accuracy. In today's world where people seem to think if they believe something, it must be true, this course should be required for anyone who wishes to educate the public whether that's through blogging, journalism, article and book writing,or developing web content. Beautifully organized, some practice articles for you try your hand at fact-checking during the course. Taking this course definitely upped my awareness of where facts may fall by the wayside unintentionally. "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." - Aldous Huxley

Having been familiar with Marcia Yudkin's excellent work for a very long time, I was delighted to take her new fact-checking course. Plus, as a current copy editor and fact checker for a health news website, I looked forward to what she might teach me. I can say that my time was not wasted - she covers the basics, but also points out areas and offers tips even the "pros" can use as a refresher or even learn more. I found the audio lessons easy to listen to. But if you prefer to learn from the written format, you can download a PDF transcript of each lesson. Most lessons also have exercises (and the answers) in PDF files you download to your desktop or device. And for those established writers who would like to offer fact checking as a service, completing the course and posting the certificate on your website, plus listing it on your resume and online profiles, is not going to hurt at all - could be the difference between a client choosing you over another writer/editor.
