What you will learn

Identify all common engine components.

Know common engine terminology.

Know how four and two stroke engines work.

Know how the engine oil, water, fuel air, exhaust and electrical systems work.

Identify a diesel or petrol engine just by looking at it.

Learn why diesel engines are more efficient.

Learn how a turbocharger works (and supercharger).

A lot about mechanical engineering!

A lot about automobile engineering!

A lot about automotive engineering!

And a lot more!

Why take this course?

Without exception, the reciprocating piston engine is the most influential machine ever invented by mankind. From its early beginnings as a steam engine, the piston engine has revolutionised the way we live, work and travel. This course will teach you about this truly amazing machine.

You will learn:

  • How An Engine Works

  • How Two Stroke and Four Stroke Engines Work

  • The Difference Between Petrol/Gasoline and Diesel Engines

  • Engine Components (Piston Rings, Rocker Arms, Valves etc.)

  • Engine Systems (Water, Oil, Air, Exhaust and Electrical)

  • Engine Terminology (BDC, TDC, Firing Order etc.)

  • How Engine Ancillaries Work (Turbocharger, Supercharger etc.)

  • A Lot About Mechanical Engineering!

  • A Lot About Automotive Engineering and Automobile Engineering!

  • And a lot more!

*** Note that this course focuses more on the diesel fired engine type rather than the petrol/gasoline type, but gives a general good overview concerning the internal combustion (IC) engine. This video course is part of a Mechanical Engineering video series (see our other courses for more info).***

This course is designed to take you from zero to hero concerning combustion engine knowledge. Even if you already have some background knowledge, this course will serve as an efficient refresher. Whatever your level of understanding, or engineering background (mechanical engineering, automobile engineering, automotive engineering, oil and gas, HVAC, power engineering, chemical engineering etc.), we can guarantee you will have never taken an engineering course like this one (unless you have taken one of our other courses...).

Why this course?

Because saVRee and saVRee lite have trained over 5,000 students on Udemy with an average paid course rating of 4.7/5.0!

Very good content, straight to the point and filled with practical examples which make the learning process very easy. You have theory and the application of it.

Excellent course on ALL internal combustion engines, both 2-stroke and 4-stroke, both gasoline/petrol and diesel. Title is a bit misleading though, I was expecting to learn more about diesel engines and maintenance. Nonetheless, great course from expert instructor.

Very easy to understand. The way you describe and run the course and the pictures (models) makes learning a joy.

The main function of a diesel engine is the fuel system and this is completely left out. A Haynes manual is more informative.

I experienced some glitches when casting the videos to my projector screen. It kept on skipping episodes and even when I would specifically go back and click on an earlier episode, it would skip ahead (usually to the 6th episode)

What is good: -Narrator speaks very clearly and with a consistent terminology -Class covers much of the basics parts and systems of a general diesel engine -3D models are VERY well made and help understanding how the parts and systems work What is a bit confusing: -Course is called diesel engine fundamentals, but some examples and sections (mainly the part about two-strokes) covers examples with gasoline engines instead of diesel engines -The section about the governors doesn't actually explain how modern engines implement them -There is mentions of very large two-stroke engines and how they differ from smaller ones, but no example on what they look like or what they do differently than small two-stroke engines What could be better: -The quiz parts at the end of the sections are well made and the questions are relevant, but the ''final'' quiz is redundant, especially since it recycles all of the questions previously seen in the other quizzes

The course is full of details and the explanations are clear and precise. The 3D models also help to understand all the mechanisms. Just a criticism: not all the models are available on the indicated website, but this is not important because it's possible to fully understand everything just following carefully the lesson. I definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to improve his knowledge about diesel engine.

The course was very engaging and practical. One of the best courses I have ever taken. I would like some addition on natural gas engines too though as these are common in oil and gas applications these days.
