Why take this course?

Update 2017: Added notice that the Mac version of Grasshopper is available (in WIP)

Update 2nd March 2015: Completed Section 6 about Data Trees and two Diagrid examples + bonus tip on remapping domains.

Update 26th Feb 2015: Added section 6 about Data Trees & Section 7 about Galapagos: a module for automatic optimisation and finding optimal solutions.

Update 23d Feb 2015: Section 5 with eight new lectures added: almost 45 minutes! Create a twisted tower, inspired by a design from S. Calatrava.

Update 20th Feb 2015: Added a PDF eBook with the course summary and highlights. This even previews some of the upcoming chapters.

In this course, you apply a basic knowledge of 3D modelling into a Parametric Approach.

Instead of creating one or two design models for a project, you learn how to develop an interactive, adapting model, controlled by a few chosen design parameters and capable of generating a wide range of design variants. Use the clever components to define an efficient and powerful system of interconnected components, creating geometry and applying geometric and mathematical operations.

Learn the same techniques innovative architectural offices apply, such as Foster of Hadid, to develop their complex designs.

Use a combination of modeled and generated geometry and still allow visual, artistic control over the result.

In a series of around three hours of video tutorials and a few short quizzes we learn Grasshopper, a parametric design add-in for McNeel Rhinoceros, which can be freely used, provided you have access to Rhinoceros.

  • The first lectures will explain the user interface and the basic concepts to control numbers, points and curves.
  • We extend this into 3D Surfaces and look at different approaches for panelling and subdividing of a façade or roof model.
  • There will be an extensive section where you’ll create a model that is similar to a twisted tower design by Calatrava, built in Sweden, step-by-step.
  • And finally, we’ll take a look at options for generative modelling, where we look at optimisation, using the Galapagos module.

So please join us and discover this widely popular visual programming system and discover how you can create some surprising results with ease.

Es bastante simple y explicativa, no se salta procesos que luego producen problemas, recomendable 100%

Not very clear at some points, the theory is fine but onces he reaches the practical exercise this was a little bit complicated to follow

The course was super interesting, and the teacher manages to introduce grasshopper in a variety of difficulty levels and make certain concepts really understandable. At times, some things went a little fast, but it's great that we're able to stop the video and try again until we get it right. Thank you so much!

Good class, gets in deep quick. Good Examples, sometimes a little fast for finding new parameters and items in menus.

very clear and practical, the only thing which is missing is the working practice between Rhino and Grasshopper i.e. once you baked something and developed the design further in Rhino how to bring it back into Grasshopper, in an efficient way.

This is a short, compact and very well explained course. The first part introduces you to the world of Grasshopper, explaining a basic set of components and their characteristics. The second part gets much more interesting as it shows how to use some of these components developing practical examples. Finally, there´s a pdf that summarizes all what has been explained during the course, including the scripts. Highly recommendable.

The course is clear, logical and explanations are simple and highly understandable by now, although, it is the very start of it! Going to be exciting!

As a student Architecture-engineering at KU Leuven, this course was very useful! I now know the basics of Grasshopper and it helps me improve my design skills as well as my computerprogramming skills. Grasshopper succeeds to connect these two different domains and thanks to this course I can easily understand the principles and it helped me alot comprehending the program and its virtues and possibilities.

After watching the videos on grasshopper I feel like I have seen all the necessary things to start working in grasshopper. Also I understand how the programs work and what is expect as inputs and outputs. The videos are from good quality, and the shorter lengths makes it easy to find something from previous videos. The more advanced stuff can be found easily on the internet, but this lecture is a good way to learn the basics of Grasshopper.

Working with real-life examples of structures makes the course interesting and easier to follow, since you know what the result should look like. I did miss some information about the efficiency of the modeling solutions though. Some of the models can require high processing power and it would be nice to know some ways to increase the efficiency of the components.

I'm very satisfied with this course. My goal was to grasp and understand how Grasshopper works and by taking this course I feel like I understand the program. The course gives you a good basis so you're able to explore the program further on your own.

This course is a good beginning when you want to start using Grasshopper. It teaches you the basics of the program without getting to difficult to understand.

There are so many components in grasshopper, and many ways to perform certain actions. The course tries to give a basic understanding of the components with some examples. This is a good course to get used to a few basic components, but there are a lot more things. Maybe a few videos about the components, or about some logic circuits or the logic behind certain combinations to get a certain goal would be more useful.

This course covers a lot of different aspects of the program without getting lost in details. If you have already done a lot of work with Grasshopper this will not be for you, but when you are just starting or don't know anything at all, this can really help you to get started.

This course focuses on the real basics of grasshopper, leaving complexe, possibly more interesting subjects untouched. Still, for someone who has never worked with this program, it is a good basic class. The video/audio quality is fine and the extra eBook is also useful.
