Great information, chilled, laidback delivery. The instructor knows his stuff, only let down was that, the resources did not work on any version of stencyl for me.

Great introduction to the basic principles of all that is involved in making a game. For those who are scared of the idea of writing code, Stencyl is a great way to get into it with its drag and drop blocks of code. Add to that the clear and helpful instructions given by this courses teacher and altogether you get a great leg up into the world of game design!

I thoroughly enjoyed taking Richards course. I always thought of making a video game but being slightly dyslexic and my complete lack of coding (and knowledge of computers in general!) created an intimidating barrier of entry for me. This course with stencyl was the perfect stepping stone to ease me in to the ideas and logic of coding. Richard also was incredibly helpful when I contacted him with the problems I was having and his responses were very timely. 5/5 would learn again

Perfect introductory course.... Richard takes you through the basics of creating a playable top down shooter video game. There is just enough meat in the lessons to make progress but not so much that it would be over anyone's head. Honestly, part of the fun of this course is the lack of rigidity - you cover the essentials without building the bells and whistles into the game. There is a ton of room to experiment - building different levels, different types of behaviours etc. You can go off and try something and have enough knowledge that you can usually get the game doing what you want. An example: the game does not keep any kind of score and it does not vary the difficulty - I managed to create a simple scoring system ( 100pts for each enemy destroyed, 500 pts for reaching checkpoint), I made 10 levels with the enemies moving slightly faster the further you progress, and included "health packs" to replenish your character when you run into them. For someone who has never done any game development, it is pretty amazing to be able to build something like that in a couple of weeks of 1 hour sessions nightly. If you're looking to get started with Stencyl I don't think you'll find a better intro than this course. What are you waiting for?

I enjoyed this course. There were more things I was hoping to learn but I think I can pick them up on my own from here. There was quite a bit covered here. If the goal of this course is make the new developer comfortable with working in Stencyl then it did just that for me! I will check out more advanced Stencyl courses now.

Great instruction - Sneyd manages to delve into complex theory and application while remaining engaging. The sections on debugging are especially critical for showing in-the-field development processes, rather than a formulaic approach that only shows the perfect product.

Update as of February 2, 2015: Hey guys, This is the third time I'm rewriting the review. Hey Richard, you may have not seen me around for few days. You know why? Because I'm set creating my own game. It's almost complete :) For all wanna-be-gamers, I didn't even finish the complete lessons. But I started working in stencyl like a pro and I've almost completed my first game. It'll be in Appstore and Google play by the end of this month hopefully. Trust me, this tutor is awesome! ------ I've just gone through 15 of your lectures. I couldn't believe I've done something myself (although it is considerably a small task) I took the brck ball stencyl kit and I didn't like to use keyboard for the paddle movement. I've just deactivated the keyboard movement and wrote code so that the paddle moves according to the mouse position. It's really a simple task. But I didn't know that it was so simple before viewing your tutorial. Not to forget that I have no background related to Coding. I've paid a lot of money on tuts and books on various software and game engines like unity3d. But trust me, I have never had done something so fast as this. Thanks to the wonderful stencyl and you. I'm going to stick with stencyl and no turning back because of you. In case you got any affiliate link to buy stencyl, let me know :) I'm sure I'm gonna learn working with stencyl faster than any of my previous attempts to learn other game engines. About the tutor: He's really great. I'm not a native English speaker. However, his pronunciation of words are clear and understandable. Above all, he keeps in touch on daily basis. When I bought this course, I thought this is at least a couple of years old and the tutor might not be interested in this course anymore. He proved me wrong. Sorry, Richard. I should've thanked you already by writing a review before you asked. But I seriously don't want to recommend this tutorial to anyone so that I may not end up with serious competitors in the fast growing gaming world. :P

As a game artist, i have only minimal knowledge about programming, but always wanted to work with a game design environment. The lessons in this course will teach you about all functions&tools to create a basic game with Stencyl. From my point of view, everything's well structured and explained step after step, so that you are not overwhelmed with all functions at once. If you should run into problems with your game, the lecturer will answer relatively fast and offers a lot of options to support you in finding the problem. At a later stage of the lections, i noticed some mistakes the lecturer added to his code(and removed very soon again) and avoided them. That was of course encouraging, since you don't just blindly repeat what he's doing, but think for yourself. I can't wait to try out all the possibilities of Stencyl with my own first dummy game, but first i'll participate in the second course for advanced games.
