What you will learn

The similarity of purpose of Mind Maps and Concept diagrams

The differences in structure between Mind Maps, Spider Diagrams and Concept Diagrams

The advantages of Mind Mapping compared to Concept Mapping

Achieve a greater understanding about the principles of mind mapping through comparison with another technique

Description

In this short course I compare and contrast Concept Diagrams (also know as Concept Maps or Conceptual Diagrams) with Buzan's Mind Mapping technique. Some teachers and trainers seem to think that Concept Maps and Mind Maps are the same thing. Both techniques are types of Graphic Organisers and although they have some similarities of purpose (to display knowledge on paper), there are many differences between the structure of the two techniques. Concept (Maps) Diagrams v Mind Mapping - what you need to know!.

The course clarified my doubts on what is and more importantly, what isn't a mind map. It's a great addition to the main course of Mindmapping Mastery.

So many folks think they know about Mind Mapping. Most don't. This course reveals the differences between Concept Maps, Spider Diagrams, and Mind Maps. Thanks, Barry, for clarifying these concepts.

Very nice supplement to what I have already learned about mind mapping, both from Barry and from other teachers.

Excellent on the practical differences between Mind Maps and Concept Maps. Barry is a clear thinker and a first-class communicator! The distinction between the two types of mapping also raises some fascinating theoretical issues which aren't covered here. For example, what types of understanding, if any, can a Concept Map communicate that would be less clear in a Mind Map, and vice versa? What value is added by the compulsory labels on the crosslinks in a Novak Concept Map? These can be optionally added to a Mind Map - eg Hierachy ___ Aids ___ Classification. But normally they are omitted and implied - eg Newton ___ Calculus. What are the costs and benefits of this flexibility? And so on. I'd have been interested in Barry's views, but I have a more academic interest in this field than most so in general I think he got the balance about right. A couple of very minor niggles. Barry generally refers to Concept Diagrams, but Novak prefers the term Concept Maps, I think. And the Concept Map in the final quiz is such an atypical example that I wasn't clear what answer he was looking for - it seemed to break the fundamental principle that a Concept Map should be a hierarchical answer to a Focus Question. TL/DR: An enjoyable course and well worth your time if you have any interest in the topic.
