Description

The most comprehensive course on how Color Theory in Game Design Works!

Why this course is special

This course not only covers the basics of what Color Theory is. It also showcases how different colors can affect players in many ways.

This course will talk about what the psychology of certain colors is, how they effect us, what they represent and the difference shades of colors mean. Understanding this is crucial in how to design levels, characters, environments, mechanics etc...

We then take a look at different color schemes and what they are. From that knowledge, we can start to see how certain schemes can work in certain situations and with creating our color palettes.

After the color theory and psychology is covered, we can now deep dive into how we can apply our new found knowledge in video games. We will look at the different functions color has in video games, colors as identifiers, varied content and much more.

My Guarantee

For every student that joins the course, they will be able to ask questions about their own games and how to go about using color to develop them. I will be available to answer any and all questions for all of my students.

The Course Structure

The course is almost all video. It will take between 2.5 hours to complete. After you finish this course, you will have a stronger understanding of how to design your games with different color palettes. You will understand the benefits of using certain schemes to create the exact emotion or feeling you want to players to have.

The course is structured into 3 main Sections.

  • Section 2: Introduction to Color Psychology

In this section, We will be taking a solid look at how each individual color  impacts us in every aspect. How they can have multiple different meanings and emotions attached to them. What they represent in society and how they effect us in our daily lives. We will also look at how some shades have very specific impacts on us.

  • Section 3: Different Color Schemes

Here, we look at what color schemes are and what they do. We will look at the multiple different ones that exist are the ways they are used in order to tell a certain story.

  • Section 4: How Color works in Game/Level Design

This is my favorite section because in this one, we will take all that knowledge we just gained from the previous 2 sections, and put it into practice. Basically we will see how colors that create a mise en scene for our players and help pull them into the game instead of pushing them. We look at the functions color has in games, what color is supposed to be used in specific ways, creating color layouts, how to vary content, how to create our very own color palette and so much more.

Money back Guarantee

The course comes with an unconditional, Udemy-backed, 30-day money-back guarantee. This is not just a guarantee, it's my personal promise to you that I will go out of my way to help you succeed.

Certification of completion when finishing this course

This course gives a very insightful look into the different types of color schemes and how/why they're used in games. Even as a game programmer and not an artist myself, I appreciated the extra knowledge and understanding of the dos and don'ts of Level Design. It did not fee like much of a "course" though; as the instructor was mostly just reading PowerPoint slides, but for a 2.5h runtime, it was short enough for me not to mind that. Looking forward to taking more of Emilio's courses!

I really enjoyed the course content, it is comprehensive and interesting. All the specific explanations are understood along with all the examples. It gives an added value in understanding colors and schemes in the context of game design.

I started this course with some sort of intuitive judgement towards colors in games. This course has given this intuition concrete names and backed some of them up with theories, while other theories in fact changed what I thought before starting this course. I still have to learn to 'read' properly what colors I'm actually seeing, but once I succeed in this through practice, I can immediately name the color schemes and ways the colors are used and how they're connected to evoking certain feelings and emotions, and subsequently I will be able to create my own color palettes, knowing exactly what I'm doing. The course is much more than a simple chat about colors. I'm very happy to have taken this course.

It's not by any means bad. It's just that it's not very good either. The instructor is very likeable but contradicts himself several times and some mistakes make you think if he even cares.

The whole information are essencial with articles and some Quiz. I had no idea this kind of knowledge was applied in games. This course was a great investment. Thank you, Emilio Padulo.

Exactly what I was looking for. Have always had difficulties with balancing the colors in my scenes and most of the times, used to always do it on a whim, whichever looked good, I would go for it. Now, I can start applying a proper process to this aspect as well and for sure, have levelled up significantly as a designer.

Short Version: DON’T BUY THIS. Look for color theory in Movie color grading or photography. They will explain even better than this course provides. ————— Long version: I’m a Game designer with Artist background. When I bought this course, I was looking for an in-depth course about how color psychology affect the game design. Sadly, this course didn’t provide enough. The course is poorly executed, with bad bad alignment (especially for one whom teaching about visual art in game design). It lacks and even use wrong example, sometimes even wrong explanation. Really disappointed.

This is what i was looking for, to learn more about the use of color psychology as a trait while creating games. It was really resourceful, understandable and easy to learn. Thanks

I loved the idea he was going for, but this was poorly executed. The presentation felt like a student project made at the last minute. It was full of spelling and grammar errors and mispronunciations. Some sentences seemed like they were copied and pasted from another site. The sentences didn't flow or just jumbled and I had to decipher what he was trying to say. I would have loved more examples from more genres. As someone who doesn't play WOW or LOL, a lot of his examples were lost on me. I would also like to see some psychology examples. For example, if I had two colored paths for a player to take, which color would they most likely choose and why. This course felt like a good introductory, but at the end I feel like I am missing 80% of the course

I love Emilio's courses, which was the main reason why I enrolled in this one. He always goes straight to the point and uses examples that we can relate to as gamers as much as we can relate to them as designers. His tone of voice and pace are great: not too slow, and there's a certain level of awareness and enthusiasm that makes it hard to lose track of. As for the course content so far, I'm really enjoying it. I am primarily a game designer who specializes in the branch of narrative design, and I wanted to delve into color psychology to better communicate with art designers, and level designers(among others) to reach our totalitary vision with more ease and understanding.

Easy to follow, useful, and relevant instruction on the application of color theory as it pertains to level design. Good for beginners that have never had instruction as well as artists looking for a refresher or new to medium.

narrator talks too fast sometimes. Some of the phrases are not so clear especially for non-native speaker.

I like the concept of this course but it feels like there's room for more density in the presentation. Lectures begin and end in nearly the same way and it currently lends heavily toward memorization to leave you with a solid starting point. Plan to make flashcards. I think it could benefit from more examples, exercises and mini quizzes to embed theory. Near the end it has an interesting peer reviewed test but strangely there was only one image with many questions and likely many more interpretive answers. This reminded me of a photography class where you're observing the feelings an image gives you by noticing lines and patterns in conjunction color. There’s a lot of potential here but it didn’t go quite as far as I’d hoped.

Overall, Emilio put together a great course here as an introduction to color theory and some good introduction to use of color in video games. I wish the second section of the course was more fleshed out, as it felt like we just began to scratch the surface of color use in games. I think it would have been greatly benefited by additional assignments to help practice the lessons being taught. The one assignment that was included in the course was really a great way to practice and check your learning, so I'm disappointed there weren't more! Either way, overall an excellent course and well worth the price (especially if you find it on sale).
