Why take this course?

Traditional project management techniques are no longer keeping up with the speed and sophistication needed to succeed in today's fast-paced world. Software development has been shifting to "Agile" project methods for about a decade now, but very few projects are purely about software. Commitment-Based Project Management (CBPM) is an Agile project management method that can be applied in any project environment.

CBPM evolved in the mid-1990's to help high tech teams that absolutely needed to meet aggressive deadlines. It has since been used with success on a very diverse range of projects. There are two key differences between CBPM and other project management approaches: 1) CBPM focuses on deliverables vs tasks at all levels of organization to ensure clear expectations and leave room for innovation, and 2) CBPM teaches a slight shift in the language used to plan and monitor projects to help teams operate from strong deliverable commitments to each other.

Team members like CBPM because it is participative and creates greater clarity and transparency about what is going on on projects. Teams that follow CBPM, have a greater sense of control and avoid painful "panic mode" down the stretch. Project Managers like CBPM because it facilitates more responsibility and accountability from all team members and because when used correctly, it prevents painful surprises and rework.

The instructor, Timm Esque, is an award winning author and consultant who along with others created this approach to projects and has been helping teams use it since 1996. Timm has been cited as an expert on performance under pressure in the Wall Street Journal. He has published over 50 articles and book chapters, 3 books, and has presented or consulted in over 15 different countries.

As Managing Partner of Ensemble Management Consulting, Timm is hoping to use these Udemy courses to get the word out about CBPM and create a broader community of CBPM practitioners.

This first course is an introduction suitable to anyone who has experience working on or leading projects at any level. It contains about 45 minutes of lectures. There are some reflection questions and a couple activities designed to give you a sense of how CBPM is different. The purpose of the first course is to provide an introduction to CBPM and help you decide if it would make sense to continue to Course 2. However, it will also point you to other CBPM resources, several of which are free online.

If you decide to continue to the second CBPM Course on Udemy, you will learn a new structure, language and techniques for running regular status review meetings. Those who implement these techniques should see very quickly how CBPM can add value to your current practices, and help any team be more productive and more predictable.

Those who learn to implement CBPM fully, can earn performance-based CBPM certifications, offered by Ensemble in partnership with the International Society of Performance Improvement.

It is very clear that CBPM is an incredibly effective way to remove ambiguity that often occurs with complex projects while having a framework to communicate with real time visibility.

The course is good and shapes teams up. Yet, when I think I want to practice every good detail in it, I am not sure when I need to deal with cultures that tend to lack responsibility in general.

I apply this technique somewhat naturally and am glad there is true definition and certification surrounding in overlay! This is awesome connectivity between mgmt layers, aside from loyalty building, lower turnover, dec. costs, greater team unity and Production Increase! Thank you!!

Coincidentally, I found this course had a lot more insightful advice than the paid course. Although, both are really great for anyone starting out in Project Management. I don't remember being compelled to jot down so much note in any other courses I've taken. :) That should speak volume of how great of a lecturer Timm is.

In order to provide a real improvements what really give a plus to business we would need to establish the whole set of principles mentioned by the course. Maybe if we can see an example or case of study... it would be incredible. Kind Regards David Alejandro Garcia.

I'm newer to project management, I have tried several methodologies and automated tracking tools in the past, however Timm's approach is simple and easy to implement and stay on top of, I am replacing my more complex strategies immediately. Thanks Timm.

Very descriptive, clear and explanatory course. Great Job! I'm using the methodology since 2010. CBPM transferred my projet management job from delays, misunderstandings to successes and FUN! by enhancing the "team work" at the same time.

CBPM is a powerful project management approach that I've used for a number of years. Timm does an excellent job of explaining what it is and how it came about. Well done!

The change in focus to commitments with quality from events, schedules and tasks is the most strikingly different--and better--aspect of CBPM. Timm takes us on his journey through CBPM from beginning to end in these simple lectures. He is very engaging, yet down to earth. Every project manager, whether full time or embedded, will benefit. The production quality of this simple series is amazingly high. I would encourage anyone who is seeking liberation from tasks and the pleasure of seeing projects deliver against commitments to take this course. Thanks for putting this together Timm.

Excellent course based on excellent content delivered thru an excellent professional. CBPM adds a valuable perspective to traditional PM-approaches. Focusing on deliverables and personal commitments team members make, creates a project atmosphere where professionals like to work in, and higher management likes to rely on. As in his previous work, Timm and his Ensemble succeeded to intelligently boil down a complex issue to a simple and easy to grasp set of rules and tools. Highly recommended! This program, and the methodology it teaches, should be part of every project manager's toolkit, it seems to me. For those who want to apply the methodology as Project Managers, it could be a great free introduction to their team. For anyone wanting to see how this approach differs from other project management methodologies, I think it clearly distinguishes its performance-based focus from the more process-driven approach we see in PM in general. I highly recommend reviewing this program, and going further toward adoption if important projects are part of your management responsibilities. As a course, it was very clear, as engaging as an online program of this kind can be, and had very good production quality. Carl Binder, Co-Founder The Performance Thinking Network
