What you will learn

Identify the parts of a computer, the basics of what they do, and their role in the system

Understand computer networking basics and explain what happens when a URL is typed into a search bar

Use the terminal (command line) to navigate a file hierarchy and perform basic operations on files

Use web proxy software to intercept packets and analyze requests and responses

Explain key technical concepts to interviewers and add these skills to their resume

Why take this course?

Have you ever wondered what happens “under the hood” when you type in a URL? Did you ever wonder how the internal parts of a computer work? This course will demystify the workings of information technology, making all of these things clear to students. If you are a beginner looking to obtain a tech job or internship or you are a college student looking to get a competitive edge, this course will give you a foundation of basic IT and Computer Engineering knowledge.

First, we will look at the basic architecture of a computer, in other words, the parts that make up a computer and what they do. Next, we will look into the concept of networking. Topics explored here will include the 7 layer network model, servers and clients, network topology, and the basic parts of a URL. You will get hands-on experience using proxy software to see requests and responses in real time. Finally, we will look at the basics of the terminal, or command line. We will explore topics like system file structure and hierarchy, basic terminal commands, and will do a hands-on demo of how to use the command line to perform basic operations such as navigating a file directory and performing operations on files.

By the end of this course, you will have a solid understanding of the basic internal workings of a computer and the internet. Next time you turn on your computer or type a URL into the search bar, you will understand what is happening and why things work the way they do. Remember, even though technology may seem to work like “magic” it is really just a bunch of 1’s and 0’s communicating with the hardware to perform operations.

I thoroughly enjoyed the lecture, but I must admit that the pace felt a bit fast, especially for beginners who are just starting to learn how to use the terminal. It would greatly benefit novice learners if there were practice videos available that demonstrate the concepts at a slower pace, providing a step-by-step approach. Nonetheless, I found the class to be informative and engaging.

Because the information so far is detailed and easy for understanding. Also the examples are really important!

This course could definitely do with more practical examples when explaining new concepts. Often times the new material is only described in mostly encyclopedic manner, providing definition but little else to help understand the concept. I would also suggest that there is an unnecessary amount of almost word for word repetition. Finally, considering that the runtime of modules is between 10 to 20 minutes (with the videos themselves having around 1, 2 or 3 minutes each) to then include a video that in itself has 15 min, only for it to be purely promotional video of other courses provided by the author and does not deal with the topic that the customer payed for, seems quite excessive.

I would prefer you spend less time discussing other courses you created, and more time with in depth information you discussed in these lectures.

The audio is basically a transcript of what is written on the PPT slides. Wish the instructor had more context to add to the notes I could take without his voice.

Less in-depth information/explanations than I expected. Hopefully the experience improves. Currently not worth the price, definitely not full price. Could have learned the same information through YouTube.

Very brief and sufficient for a beginner in the IT world and I totally recommend it for anybody who wants to build up the basic foundations of how to use and deal with computer and IT in general.

This was an excellent course to get started and I really like the idea that I can go back to review the info that didn't quite stick in my head.

this is a very very short class and this not what I was looking for. It is a nice well structured and clear summary. There are almost no example to explain the different parts. The course should be expanded. Definitively no worth the $22 I spent ! It should be $10 at most. The slides are clear.
