Why take this course?

Mechanics of Materials is the primary course for  mechanical engineering and is used in the design of structures and machines.

A thorough understanding of the foundational concepts of the subject is important to for mechanical design whether it be designing a single structure which has to take loads or whether it is designing an elaborate Transmission systems which is undergoing dynamic loading conditions.  Mechanics of materials concepts are cornerstone of any type of mechanical design .

In this course we will be covering the following concepts :

  1. Introduction to Machine design - What is nature of machine design ? What does it include ? What is the engineering design process?

  2. Importance of analysis of strength and difference between strength and stress

  3. Essential basics of engineering statics - Method of statics, Free body diagrams, Force equilibrium , types of joints

  4. primary types of loading- Normal and shear

  5. What is Bearing stress

  6. Explanation of Stress and strain relations with Tensile test and its inferences along with definitions of tensile strength , yield strength .

  7. Hookes law

  8. Shear Stress strain relations and Shear stress in Shafts undergoing action of torque- Torsion.

  9. What is Poissons' Ratio

  10. Analysis of Axially loaded member and what is stress concentration

  11. Analysis of Stress in Oblique plane for axially loaded member

  12. What is Pure bending ? Derivation of governing equations .

  13. What is Area moment of Inertia

  14. Analysis of Beams and deriving shear force and Bending moment diagrams

  15. Two Plane bending in shafts

  16. Stress concentration in Bending

  17. Analysis of Shaft in torsion and derivation of Governing equations

  18. Solid vs Hollow shafts

  19. Stress concentration in Shafts

  20. Multi axial Loading , Dilatation and Bulk Modulus

  21. State of Stress and Stress transformations

  22. Analysis of Thin walled pressure vessels

  23. What is Principal stress and derivation of Mohrs' Circle

  24. Comparison of plane of Principal stress and Maximum Shear

The course covers the Theoretical basics required to design standard  elements in structures and machines.

Aim of the course is to build a strong well rooted understanding of the concepts rather than just mere application of formulae.

A good engineer knows the underlying assumptions of each formula they use in application and hence knowing the mathematical back ground is very important for effective design.

I took this course to re-familiarize myself with mechanics of materials. I cannot stress enough how much this subject confused me in college, but where I once went away from this topic ashamed and overwhelmed, I come away from this course feeling empowered and enthusiastic. I greatly appreciate the author's careful explanations and step-by-step presentation of the math when deriving equations, and in particular, his awareness of the spots where it might be confusing for the listener. I also think the author is very clever to break these lessons into short, 3 minute chunks, as it has a way of motivating you to stick around for just one more video. While I have no complaints whatsoever, I might call attention to a couple of lectures with minor sound glitches, and one that repeats about 30 seconds of the previous video before beginning. All in all, however, this is a most excellent course and I can't wait to start the next one from this author! Thank you!

Thanks for the in-depth coverage of topics. I feel quizzes could be added to check the level of understanding of students.

As an electrical engineer I found it useful recap on material I had learned before. The down side is there are clearly errors in the material - I am not the only one who has noticed this and I have seen a number of queries with apparently no response from the course presenter. Where there is something you are not sure about it leaves you thinking - is it a mistake or is it something I don't understand and am missing the point ? It is a problem with Udemy in that people upgrade a course they first prepared 1,2 or 3 years ago but they no longer want to provide the support on the upgrade. Udemy should do something about this.

Theoretical explanation was good, as i am professional mechanical , would expect more of practical tiny examples ,on each unit.

Very good match yes. I'm brushing up my fundamentals. A few quizzes however would have made it even better!
