What you will learn

install MySQL on a Ubuntu machine.

perform basic administrative tasks in MySQL.

use the vi program to edit the MySQL configuration file.

perform port-forwarding with Vagrant.

scrape hit location data from PITCHf/x.

query MySQL from R.

Description

This course is about working with large sets of PITCHf/x data to create batting location charts. We use R to scrape and visualize the data and MySQL to store the data. The course includes lessons on how to install a virtual Ubuntu machine, how to install MySQL, how to perform basic MySQL administrative tasks, and how to connect R and MySQL.

It would be best if you have some knowledge of R and ggplot. This can be obtained through my previous three courses in baseball analytics. However, it might be possible to follow along without this.

At a relaxed pace, the course should take about two weeks to complete.

interesting info and when I figure out how this can be useful for me I'll use it. I took the course for added info to my training on database.

I thought this was a great class. It covered lots of information, but not so fast that you couldn't digest it. The only thing this class is missing is the example code that is being run.

This was a great course. The best part was learning how to connect mysql to RStudio. I also was surprised to see that David Ortiz had an infield single.

I like the clear explanations and that the font is large. Overall the course is rather small but good.

Very interesting and useful. Short, with good examples and problems and really well explained. Keep doing this great job! A very pertinent course for those who want to know about ggplot and how to connect R with MySQL.

I have no interest in baseball or R (mainly use Python). However I feel like I learned something new about both, as well as Vagrant and mysql. All in less than 2hrs... Great course!
