The best thing about aquaponics is it represents the natural ecosystem, in which plants feed on fish waste products and plants clean the water for fish while nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia to nitrates which are used by plants.

The interesting thing about aquaponics is you can establish it either at a small level (home) or commercial level.
