What you will learn

How to avoid common mistakes with design and composition.

How to paint loose, expressive still life art.

Painting in layers to create more dynamic qualities.

Description

In this class you will learn a variety of tips for how to paint expressive still life artwork. As with any style an artist needs to develop the right approach to their creativity in order to find freedom in their work.

Painting loosely requires just as much skill as any other style. Perhaps less time but the technique needs to be there! To pull off abstract style art you need to develop good fundamentals and be willing to invest time in design and composition. This is where you find freedom!

The Common Misconception

Many artists think painting loosely is easy. Just grab a brush, load it up with paint and start slinging it on the canvas. You may get lucky once in a while doing this but more often than not it ends in more heartache. Plus you waste valuable studio time, materials and money.

There's A Better Solution

Simplifying your subjects into basic geometric shapes can easily improve your paintings. Why? Because now you will have the opportunity to work quickly in the design process. It's much easier to sketch basic shapes than detailed objects. And once you understand this concept you will start to envision how these basic shapes fit within the frame.

Included In This Course

Three complete finished painting examples that are created from start to finish. Each example is slightly different and will focus on certain aspects of design and expressive painting techniques. This will give you a well rounded look at how you can approach your subjects and teach you various methods for painting expressively.

I appreciate the two videos on laying out the still life and objects but this course was much too short. Also my fault cause I like watercolor not acrylic.

I would have liked the subject matter to be a bit more interesting. Fruit and flowers - still life can be much more than that

Inspiring. The course is short and sweet. Instructor has a pleasant style of teaching. He touches mainly on composition with a very loose style of brush work. I would say that his expressive paint style would be the opposite of photo realism and he makes it work. I learned alot.

I'm not sure if I could paint in this style, but I enjoyed watching the demos and love the way the teacher explains his process. I can definitely use his ideas in learning to paint. I can't wait to get started.

There's a genius in the final paintings that I'm still trying to get my head around. The tutor manages to balance light and shade, colours and shapes so that the images do appear to be the objects they represent. For example, the lemons do not look like anatomical lemons, yet they are definitely the fruit. I can't wait to try out the techniques because while this will require some practise to get such things as the light and shadow where there should be there is also a freedom, and fun, with painting I hadn't considered.

As a painter and instructor I love to watch other artists’ techniques. I appreciated how simple Mr. Joyner’s kit is. Just a few colors and brushes.
