What is a Swarajati?
Swarajathis are treasures in the world of Carnatic music, serving as a precursor to mastering the art of varnams. These compositions are a blend of musical prowess and poetic beauty, typically incorporating a pallavi, an anupallavi (optional), and at least one charanam. The themes of Swarajathis often revolve around devotion, love, or courage, crafting a rich emotional narrative. The legendary Swarajati by Melattur Veerabhadrayya in Huseni raga, "hau re raa bhagaya", is a testament to the timeless appeal of this genre.
Exploring Swarapallavis
Swarapallavis are captivating compositions that focus solely on the musical framework, the dhatu, without the accompaniment of lyrics. These scholarly pieces are usually learned post-geethas and before tackling varnams, and they encapsulate the essence of the raga they are composed in. Swara Pallavis, as they are also known, are set to a moderate tempo like Adi or Chapu talas and typically consist of 2 to 3 parts: Pallavi, Anupallavi (occasionally), and Charanams. The Charanams may occasionally include mrudanga Jathis, which is where the term "Jathi swarams" originates.
Key Aspects of Swarapallavis:
- Compositional Structure: Similar to Swara Jathis, Swara Pallavis begin with the dhatu (swara) and, unlike the latter, do not include the sahitya (lyrics).
- Tempo: Usually set in Madyama kalam (medium tempo), but can also be performed in Chauka kala (slow tempo) or Madhyama kala (medium tempo).
- Rhythmical Focus: Jatiswarams are not only melodic but also exhibit rhythmical complexity. They are crafted from jati passages/pattems and are of interest from a rhythmical standpoint.
Prominent Composers of Jatiswarams:
- Swati Tirunal
- Ponnayya
- Sivanandam
- Vadivelu
- Veena Krishnamachari
Ganakrama (Order of Singing)
To master the art of singing Swarajathis and Swarapallavis, it is crucial to follow the proper Ganakrama:
- Pallavi: Begin with the Pallavi, setting the tone for the composition.
- Charanam 1-Pallavi: After singing the Charanam, return to the Pallavi to reinforce the melody.
- Charanam 2-Pallavi: Continue this pattern, moving through each Charanam and returning to the Pallavi.
- Repeat for all Charanams: Ensure each Charanam is sung followed by a repeat of the Pallavi.
